Start with serving size — not calories

The very first line in the Nutrition Facts box tells you the serving size and how many servings are in the package. Every number below it — calories, fat, sodium, everything — applies to that one serving, not the whole container.

A bag of chips might list 140 calories per serving, but if the bag contains 3.5 servings and you eat the whole bag, you've consumed nearly 500 calories. This single step corrects the most common misreading of nutrition labels.

Check calories in context

Separate total sugars from added sugars

The updated nutrition label now distinguishes between total sugars and added sugars. Total sugars include naturally occurring sugars (like those in fruit or dairy) as well as sugars added during processing. Added sugars are the ones most associated with empty calories.

A yogurt might show 18g total sugar, but only 5g added sugar — the rest comes from lactose naturally present in milk. That's a meaningfully different picture than a product where nearly all the sugar was added.

Read the ingredient list from top to bottom

Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight — the first ingredient makes up the largest proportion of the product. If refined flour, sugar, or a type of oil appears in the first two or three spots, that's what you're mostly eating.

A shorter ingredient list often (but not always) signals less processing. Watch for added sugars hiding under alternate names: corn syrup, dextrose, maltose, fruit juice concentrate, and evaporated cane juice are all forms of added sugar.

Tip: If you see a nutrient you're trying to limit listed among the first three ingredients, that's a reliable signal the product is high in that nutrient.

Labels Don't Account for Your Individual Needs

The % Daily Values on nutrition labels are based on a general 2,000-calorie diet for a typical adult. Your actual needs may differ based on age, activity level, health conditions, or life stage — including pregnancy. The label is a useful comparison tool, but it's not a personal prescription.
